My Big Hat at the 2007 Kentucky Derby

If you have the opportunity to attend the Kentucky Derby, other other similar event where semi-formal fashion is appropriate, you can look great without spending a lot of money.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • dress or skirt and blouse in solid color
  • silk flowers, ribbon, craft glue, hair comb or barrette
  • sun hat or church hat
  1. Step 1

Select your outfit from your closet or ask a friend for a loaner. Choose a solid color shift dress or skirt and blouse of the same color. Solid colors add sophistication.

  2. Step 2

Dress up your outfit with a simple strand of pearls. Wear your costume jewelry ladies, I promise no one will notice. Go big with your jewelry if you wear a hat. Hats make everything look smaller.

  3. Step 3

Choose a pair of sensible heels and pack a pair of ballet slippers in your purse. Wear these walking to and from the track. Churchill Downs is surrounded by gravel so if you don't change your shoes you might ruin a nice set of heels. Another option is to wear wedges or espadrilles which are perfect for Spring.
Now dress us your shoes with silk flowers. Simple glue onto a hair clip, then clip onto the front or side of your shoe.

  4. Step 4

The best part of your outfit will be on top - either a hat or a great silk flower. Many women wear hats. You can make a great hat by taking an inexpensive sun hat or church hat and adding ribbons and silk flowers. Simply attach your embellishments with a glue gun and you are ready to go!

If you aren't comfortable in a hat, use a large silk flower glued to a hair clip. This will look stunning and add lots of inexpensive flair to your outfit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cover the back of the clip with a band-aid so it won't rub your foot.
  • If you wear a hat, pack a plastic garbage bag to wrap it in in case it rains while you are walking to and from the track.
  • Red roses are the perfect flower for race day, pink lillies are great to wear to the Oaks
  • Use stick deodorant on your feet so you won't get blisters.
  • pack band-aids in your purse just in case
  • take a plastic garbage bag for your hat in case it rains
  • wear sunglasses - you'll look like a movie star!
