How to Teach a Dog to Heel

One of the most important things to teach your dog is how to "Heel". This command helps prevent your dog from pulling you down the road, and makes taking your dog for a walk or jog much more enjoyable.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Choke Collar
  • 6' Leash
  1. Step 1

    Begin by placing a choke collar on your dog. The collar should look like the letter "P" when you are facing your dog. This will ensure that when you correct your dog, the collar does not bind up. The collar is used to "correct" the dog, not actually choke them. Attach a six foot leash to your dogs collar and you are now ready to begin

  2. Step 2

    Hold the end of the leash with your right hand, and position your left hand around the leash about two feet away from your dog. With your dog standing on the opposite side of the hand you hold the lease with, Begin walking in a straight line. If your dog begins to get ahead of you, use your left hand to "jerk" the leash back while repeating the word "Heel" to your dog.

  3. Step 3

    Each time your dog returns to the right spot, praise them and give them a treat. After a while they will learn to stay at your heel, and not get ahead of you.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is never too early, or to late to begin training your dog.
  • Always use the same commands and or gestures so your dog doesn't get confused
