How to Operate a Computer like Riding a Bicycle
Once you learn the basics it's just like riding a bicycle, you never forget. Well, I don't believe that this is true all the time, especially with new technology today, but operating your computer should be a lot like riding a bike. It is up to you to just jump on and go for it, or get some instruction on your new computer. When computers first came out we were introduced to them through games and text adventures. Then people realized that they could do more with a little bit of programming and training. That is just like our bicycles when we first got on it. The new bike looked great and we stumbled and fell a few times. But later we were jumping ramps and mountain biking all day.

Follow the instructions. Just like learning to ride your first bike, learning to use a computer requires some instruction. Although you can take classes and play around with programs, having someone there by your side when you take your first fall is always helpful. Fortunately the scrapes and bumps from computer use don't require bandages and ice and you don't need to wear that silly helmet.

Get to know the basics. Once you have the basics down and you take it for a ride expect a few bumps and scrapes along the way. Just like hopping on that shiny new bike, turning on the computer is easy. Once you get both feet off the ground and pick up some speed, you just might lose your balance, but with practice you will soon find yourself sailing along.

Go for a ride down the highway for adventure. Just like on your bike, you may find obstacles in your way. This is the same thing when you get on the Internet. There are more then one or two people riding the Internet highway. You will find that sometimes the connections are slow and other areas where you should stop and think before entering; however, on your bike you will not be able to call or email someone for help. Oh, now a days you can do that!

Do not operate your equipment when you're tired or sick. When we were young we use to go out and ride our bikes in the rain. We would come home wet, cold and get sick. Well, if we had worn rain gear we could have avoided that. It's no different with your computer. To keep your computer healthy you need to protect it from bugs and viruses on the Internet. If your computer gets infected, it will sit there, like your bike, because you are sick and tired of using it. Grandma's recipe of chicken soup is not going to help your computer, but virus protection programs will.

Don't lend your equipment to anyone, not even your best friend. You know from time to time people ask to use your computer. Well, remember when you lent your bike and it came back with the seat and handle bars adjusted and your baseball cards that you had attached to the spokes were gone? That will happen to your computer too, because people like to make adjustments for a better ride. Your icons will be moved around and files might be missing. But, worst of all you will find new stickers, like the pink tassels attached to your handlebars, because your best friend lent it to his sister.

Make proper adjustments before getting on your equipment. Getting on your bike is not that simple. You need to stretch and loosen up your muscles before the ride. You need to make sure the seat and handle bars are adjusted properly to have an enjoyable ride. Also, don't forget the safety helmet and bright color shirt so people will see us on the road. Does that sound familiar to getting on your computer? If you are going to be spending the day working behind the computer screen there are things you need to do. First adjust you chair for proper height and distance. Check your screen for proper clarity with and without glasses. Do a little stretching of fingers, arms and legs. Make sure your computer is functioning properly. Have a few cups of coffee to wake up, so you'll fully enjoy the ride.

Do preventive maintenance to keep it running smoother. To keep your bike running smoothly you have to clean it and oil the gears. Our computer is like our bike, we have to make sure it is clean and files are maintained weekly or daily. You should defrag your registry and files, on a regular bases. Make sure virus and malware software is up to date to work properly. Do regular cleaning of the file and short cuts that are not used. Like our bike we should schedule a day to perform these tasks. Other maintenance is done on a daily bases or can be scheduled through the programs. Regular maintenance will offer you a smoother experience on your computer, just like a well oiled bike.
