Is the Avian Pig Flu Next?

Super bugs, salmonella-tainted (______fill in the food du jour) incipient flu pandemics, knowing what makes your immune system strong and healthy can save your life. But knowing is not enough. It's time to "not talk, just do" as Yoda said.

Here are the three most important things you can do to boost your cells immune function so you maintain a terroir robust that that can ward off whatever bugs you this day.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Enjoy regular physical recreation. The key word is enjoyment of every moment. Enjoyment is every bit as immune boosting as is physical exercise, and when you combine fun with a work-out you get a rush of positive endorphins that provides benefits far greater than either alone. Take pleasure in an refreshing selection of walking, hiking, biking, swimming, running, paddling, boarding, tennis, soccer and aerobic classes so you maintain vigorous immunity. Thirty minutes a day is good, longer-at least every other day is better.

  2. Step 2

Meditate to calm your mind. Multitasking is stressful. Stress causes a number of diseases. A five-minute single-task meditation will improve your mind's ability to protect you by reducing your levels of stress. Observing the breath, focusing on a candle, saying a favorite line of scripture, walking much more slowly, listening intently to a favorite melody, noticing the patterns of light on the wall-whatever you find completely engages your mind-even for one moment, will release a flood of immune-boosting endorphins.

  3. Step 3

Nourish your healthy self. Sugar, white flour, chemically produced and preserved foods feed your sick self. Can you really afford to do that anymore? Your healthy self needs a nutrient-rich diet composed primarily of pure water, vegetables prepared with olive or flaxseed oil, and seasoned with anti-cancer herbs like garlic and spices like turmeric. Meat, fish and eggs in much smaller quantities are okay, as well as fruits and occasional grains and beans. And of course, every ingredient sourced from organic farms and gardens.

Tips & Warnings
  • Step Beyond: Learn to be happy: Most people discover genuine pleasure in making choices that are good for them. The best health promoting activity is to change your mind. Replace negative self-talk with a strongly positive mental attitude. Discover reasons to be happy along with a genuine sense of gratitude, and savor each and every moment to rally the body's natural defenses.
