How to Save Files in Different Formats

You can save a file in a different format so that people can read it even if they don't have the application you used to create it. Some formats also make it easier and quicker to send a file via e-mail. You can also change the format of a picture so you can use it in different applications. These instructions should work for different applications and operating systems.

1. Open the file you want to change by double-clicking on it.

2. Click on File.

3. Click on Save As.

4. Type a new name for the file, if you want to rename it, in the "File name" box.

5. Hit the arrow next to the "Save as type" box and choose what format you want to save it in.

6. Choose a location for the new file.

7. Click the Save button.

Tips & Warnings

• The list of formats will vary depending on what kind of file you're trying to save and the application you're using.
• If you're saving a resume so you can post it on the Internet, save it as a plain (or ASCII) text file so it can be seen properly.
• Save pictures in JPEG if you want to keep them on a disk, so you can fit more of them on it. JPEG is also a good image format for e-mail purposes, so you can upload them faster and the recipient can download them faster.
• Change the format of a Word document so it can be read in different versions of Word and on different programs. RTF, or Rich Text Format, can be read by many different word processors, and it retains formatting. Any program can read plain or ASCII text, but formatting is lost.

on 10/30/2008 I sometimes use VSO Image Resizer to convert the picture into a different file format (often png to jpeg).
