How to Make a Kitchen Apron With Embroidery

There's no reason an apron shouldn't be useable, becoming and decorative. Here's how to make a kitchen apron with embroidery accents.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sewing machine (or hand sew of course)
  • Fabric
  • Thread, including embroidery thread
  • Pattern paper: butcher's paper, tissue paper or other suitable source.
  • Transfer paper or tracing paper
  • Scissor
  • Ruler
  1. Step 1

    Layout and cut the pattern according to specifications.

  2. Step 2

    Start with a 38 1/2-inch-wide, 28-inch long piece of cotton broadcloth (or fabric of your choosing).

  3. Step 3

    To make the apron hems, turn back the sides of the rectangle to make a 1- 1/2-inch wide along the two sides and bottom of the apron.

  4. Step 4

    To fit and attach the waistband(which you can make straight or pointed) by gathering the top of the apron to fit.

  5. Step 5

    To make the tie-ends:
    • Cut two pieces of 26-inch long, 4-inch wide fabric.
    • Take one piece of fabric (which will be the tie-end) and fold it in half the long way with right sides together.
    • Lightly iron.
    • Stitch a 3/8- inch hem around the tie-end. Details: Leave one of the shorter ends open and miter the other.
    • Turn the tie-end inside out and press.
    • Repeat the process using the second tie-end.

  6. Step 6

    Attach the tie-ends to the ends of the apron’s waistband.

    To make pockets:
    • Cut pockets according to specifications.
    • Fold under the top end 3/8-inches, then fold down another inch and stitch 3/8-inches to close.
    • Attach pockets to the front of the apron by turning under the edges 3/8-inches and top stitching along the remaining three sides, leaving the top opened.

  8. Step 8

    Attach pockets to the front of the apron.

    Finally, use embroidery stitches to decorate the apron.
    • Feather stitch borders of the waistband ties, apron skirt and pockets.
    • Chain stitch the waves on the tie ends, across the waistband, on the pockets and the outlining of the flowers and leaves.
    • French knot accent the flowers.
    **Of course you can decorate you new apron anyway
    you choose**
