Decorate Your Porch
Decorate Your Porch

For anyone who has a front porch, a back porch, balcony, outdoor deck - this is the article to read for some creative ideas on furnishing that neglected space!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Creativity
  • Paint
  • Lighting
  • Furniture
  • Accessories
  • An ice cold fresh squeezed lemonade (ok, beer, margarita, iced tea...)
  1. Step 1

Longer days are ahead, currently we are in Spring, warmer days are still to come (that is if you are reading this in April) - but no matter the time of year - if you have an outdoor space that needs some TLC anytime is the right time to get it spruced up. If the paint is chipping away, the floor boards are dry and cracked - you've got some work to do to fix it and clean it up. A glossy white interior painted overhang will help liven up any dark decayed porch, likewise the floorboards too - but consider a color that correlates with the sideing/exterior paint colors - go chocolate brown, green, gray, beige, or even a black and white striped. If you can tile, set stone, or even wood deck tiles - a nice floor really helps improve the space. An easy fix - an outdoor woven area rug.

  2. Step 2

Lighting - adequate lighting is a must have for spending evenings that roll into nights on an outdoor porch. Recessed lighting placed equal distance apart will help provide balanced light. Outdoor wall sconces make a great "nightlight" to leave on if you are coming and going. A decorative light fixture placed on center or even a ceiling fan with a light is great mixed in with the recessed lighting. Need to light steps? Try solar powered lighting which don't need to be wired. You can also mount fixtures into the ground.

  3. Step 3

Furnishings - there are many sources of outdoor furniture for all kinds of styles and function. The important thing is it fits your needs. If you are going to be doing a lot of outdoor dining - a table and chairs are a must. Round, square, expandable - all depends on the amount of room you have. If you do have a fair amount of square footage - it's nice to create "rooms" within a room - maybe on one end you have the dining area, the other a an outdoor sofa/loves eat with tables, maybe in the middle a few lounge chairs. Even a hanging "mattress swing" or hammock. If there is not overhang - purchasing an outdoor umbrella or two can help provide shade. Many affordable options are out there.

  4. Step 4

If you do have openings and want privacy you can always have outdoor window coverings made (or purchased). Drpaery panels or roll up shades provide shielding from strong rays, privacy and a nice decorative touch. Sunbrella is a great outdoor fabric that is best used for drapery panels.
