Technology may have advanced by leaps and bounds over the last few generations, but children -- young and old -- still enjoy playing with mud. Buying modeling clay at an art supply store can be needlessly expensive, however. Here's a way to inexpensively make your own clay. The main ingredients (cornstarch and baking soda) are edible, so this is a great way to keep kids, even young ones, entertained.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 Cup of Cornstarch
  • 2 Cups of Baking Soda
  • 1 1/2 Cups of Water
  1. Step 1

Mix 1 cup of cornstarch with 2 cups of bicarbonate of soda (aka baking soda) and 1 ½ cups of cold water. Cornstarch and baking soda should be easy to find at your local grocery store.

  2. Step 2

OPTIONAL: Add food coloring - any color you like. Most grocery stores keep this in the baking aisle. If not, ask for assistance.

  3. Step 3

Heat this combination in a saucepan over a stove set at medium. Stir constantly until you achieve a dough-like consistency. Voila!

  4. Step 4

When you are done working the clay, you can cool the clay under a damp rag. Covering the finished product in a coat of shellac will preserve the finished product.
