What Should I Wear?
What Should I Wear?

Most ladies have a difficult time trying to figure out what to put together to dress appropriately for a wedding. If you have been invited to a wedding or have been asked to take part in it, read on to learn some helpful tips in putting together the perfect ensemble for your wedding occassion!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Set Shopping Budget
  • Fashion/Wedding magazines
  • Instructions (if any) included in the invitation
  • Know the time, date, and location of the wedding
  1. Step 1
    Check Your Invitation!

    Check Your Invitation!

YOU'RE INVITED! Once the invitation is received, hang on to it for quick reference. This will not only help you remember the date, time, and location of the wedding, but will also give you the information needed to assist you in shopping for clothing that is appropriate for the wedding.

  2. Step 2
    Get Ideas!

    Get Ideas!

GET IDEAS! Look through some wedding magazines or fashion magazines and clip pictures of outfits that you not only like, but may find appropriate to wear to a wedding. Sunday paper department store ads work great too! Keep these in a envelope, folder, or scrapbook and stick them in your purse. This will not only give you something visual to look at for ideas on what to pick out, but it may help a salesperson learn your own individual style when assisting you in shopping.

  3. Step 3
Dates, Times, and Locations Are Key!

Dates, Times, and Locations Are Key!

The TIME, DATE, and LOCATION of the wedding is very important! Knowing this information is vital in picking out an appropriate wedding outfit. Why are these three items so important? The TIME of the wedding is key. Many ladies love to wear BLACK and often wonder if its appropriate for a wedding. Yes it is, as long as its after 3:00 p. m. and will last on through the evening hours. If you are going to a wedding at 11:00 a.m. it may be more appropriate to pick lighter, brighter colors and patterns. The DATE of the wedding is helpful because it lets you know what season the wedding will take place in. Summer weddings are popular, but people get married throughout the year. If it take place in February, the colors cream, red, or pink would be appropriate (think Valentine's Day). If in October, think of all the colors in relation to the fall season, such as rust, copper, oranges, browns, and greens, etc. The LOCATION is important because it will give you an idea of how "fancy" you should dress. If it is a country club, hotel, or reception hall it may be black-tie appropriate (semi-formal wear). If you are attending a backyard simple wedding or a beach wedding, don't overdo it! A simple sundress can do the trick here. If you are ever unsure, call people in the wedding party and ask their advice on what they expect you to wear.

  4. Step 4
Yank Out That Little Black Dress!

Yank Out That Little Black Dress!

THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS. Every woman should have a little black dress in her closet! (If you don't, purchase one!)In times past, it was generally frowned upon to wear black to weddings, mostly because they were reserved for funerals or to symbolize mourning. Weddings are celebrations! Ladies, please don't overlook that black dress you love and hardly pull out to wear! If it's simple enough it is so easy to dress it up by adding a multi-colored scarf or bright solid colored wrap. Pick brighter colored accessories such as a turquoise strand of beads and silver sandals adorned with rhinestones. Have saleswomen assist you, especially when visiting department stores. They do this for a living and can provide you wonderful ideas and insight on how to dress appropriately.

  5. Step 5
    Save Your Cash By Budgeting!

    Save Your Cash By Budgeting!

STAY ON BUDGET! If you are on a tight shopping budget, please don't forget to check consignment shops, resale shops or thrift shops! Don't know the difference? Check out my article link below to learn the difference in these types of second-hand stores. Consignment shops will usually have very different and eclectic pieces to choose from so you will stand out (in a good way) and not have the same dress everyone else is wearing. Shop online at Ebay.com or Etsy.com for something vintage to wear. Vintage clothing (pre-1980's) is very trendy at the moment, pair it with something new for a one-of-a-kind outfit. Check out department store websites for extra coupons or savings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never hesitate to call the bride or groom and ask them questions
  • Keep track of your invitation for quick reference
  • Check out department stores websites or pullouts from your local newspaper for coupons or special sales
  • Don't forget to look into consignment or other secondhand shops if you are on a tight budget
  • Please use common sense
  • If you don't have much, find a personal shopper or sales clerk to assist you
