Joining a gym can be an expensive and time-consuming venture. With a little creativity and a modest budget, you too can enjoy your very own home gym.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Space in your home
  • Budget Plan
  • Research Time
  • Pen/Paper for Design Ideas
  1. Step 1

The first step is to find what space you have available that can be dedicated to a home gym. It may be a portion of a room, part of a basement or if you are lucky, an entire room! Measure out the space available and plot the dimensions on a piece of paper. Make sure to note a couple things on your drawing like outlets available, lighting, ceiling height, etc.

  2. Step 2

Next evaluate any fitness equipment you may already have. What kind of workouts do you want to accomplish in this space? Perhaps you are into yoga and wish to have minimal equipment in your area or maybe you desire cardio machines to create your perfect gym. Make sure you have a goal for your space so that it is a space you WANT to be and spend quality time in.

  3. Step 3

Now that you have evaluated what you envision in your space, start your designing. Keep your budget in mind and evaluate any new equipment you wish to add to your space. Make sure it fits in your space and budget. Take time to research the pros and cons of different types of equipment, your skills and goals. Say for example you want to get one cardio machine that gives you an all around workout, an elliptical machine may be your best bet. Try to design your gym so that a total body workout is accomplished (i.e. free weights, cardio, ball for stretching, etc.)

  4. Step 4

Some nice things to add to a gym that are not absolutely required include mirrors, a TV, stereo, towel holders, motivational posters, etc. Adding special items like these will tend to draw you into the room to workout and then keep you there longer. Use whatever motivates you to get into that room and stay there!

Tips & Warnings
  • Your gym can be a work in progress if your budget can't match your current plans.
  • Make your gym a sanctuary and a place for some "me time."
  • Shop garage sales and online ads, you will be amazed at the deals you can find on lightly used gym equipment!
