Corned Beef
Corned Beef

Although corned beef is a traditional St. Patrick's day meat that goes nicely with potatoes, carrots and cabbage, it can be enjoyed any time of the year. Going to the supermarket to choose your corned beef for the first time can be a little frustrating.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the supermarket to choose your corned beef -- a St. Patrick's Day favorite.

  2. Step 2

While at the supermarket you will find at least three different cuts of corned beef: Point Cut, Flat Cut(also known as Thin Cut) and Round Cut.

  3. Step 3

Decide which cut to purchase by using these guidelines:
Point Cut is the least expensive, fattiest and has the highest calorie count.
Flat Cut (aka Thin Cut) is a little pricier, has less fat and less calories than the Point Cut. This cut is the most popular. Flat cut is 230 calories per serving of 4 oz. uncooked.
Round Cut is more expensive with less fat and calories. Due to the lack of fat, the flavor is not as good as either the Flat or the Point Cut. Round is 120 calories per serving of 4 oz. uncooked.

  4. Step 4

The only way to be certain which is the right one for you might be to purchase a different one each time and keep notes on whether or not you liked it. There can even be a difference with brands.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you can't seem to decide go with the Flat/Thin cut, you won't be disappointed.
