If you are a frequent blog reader, you may be impressed with the way that some commenters are able to format their comments with blocks of quoted text. How do they do that?

Some blogs support block quoting in comments. Others do not. Not everyone knows how. All you need to know is a little HTML. This tutorial will show you the way.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find the beginning and end of the text you want to set apart from the rest of your comment as a block of quoted text. This can be a word, a sentence, a paragraph, or several paragraphs. It doesn't matter.

  2. Step 2

Familiarize yourself with the blockquote tags in HTML. This tutorial includes an image of the tags. Click on the image to see what you will need to type.

  3. Step 3

Bookend the text you want to set apart from the rest of your comment with the blockquote tags. Click on the image to see an example.

  4. Step 4

If the blog has a preview function, use it. Common mistakes include forgetting a "<" or ">" symbol or the forward slash "/" in the final tag

  5. Step 5

REMEMBER TO CLOSE YOUR BLOCKQUOTE TAG. Blockquote tags are like bookends. One goes in the front. The other goes at the end. Failure to do so may mess up subsequent comments and annoy the blog administrator

  6. Step 6

If people ask about how to do this, send them to this tutorial. It can often be difficult to explain without showing someone a picture, because typing the text necessary to show someone how will often make the computer perform the block quote rather than show the text.
