An effective warehouse manager understands that working well with employees is just as important as keeping control of the inventory. The warehouse is a critical element of a business and keeping it running smoothly benefits the company's bottom line. Effectiveness is gauged by communication skills and employee morale. Being an effective warehouse manager is different from being a white collar manager in that it requires a willingness to participate in the physical operations of the facility. Follow these helpful guidelines for being successful at this managerial position.

Instructions

    • 1

Pitch in with the warehouse work even if it is not part of your job description. Your employees will appreciate a hands-on approach and you'll learn first-hand how well or poorly the warehouse is operating.

    • 2

Take the time to properly train your employees to do their jobs. Let them know that you are available to answer questions and help out with difficult or confusing tasks.

    • 3

Conduct regular performance reviews of employees. Point out areas that need improvement and suggest methods for progress in those areas. Highlight the employees' strengths and give credit where it is due.

    • 4

Respect your workers' perspectives on the job. Ask their opinion, request input and implement good ideas. Reward good work and good ideas.

    • 5

Get involved with employees who are not performing well. Find out if there are things outside the workplace that are affecting their performance, but respect their privacy if they don't want to share them. Work with the employees towards improvement.

    • 6

Take responsibility for the warehouse operations. Make sure that inventory is checked in correctly. Train employees to use computer systems. Check outgoing shipments for accuracy. Work on systems to improve the efficiency of the operation and implement them.
