      Business Woman

Get your Bible and turn to Psalms 31 (NIV)

Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character

10 A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.11 Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.12 She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.

This introductory verse is self-explanatory. But it is to be noted that a wife should be valued highly. Today the downside of being a wife is that society does not place a high priority on the position of a wife. Somewhere along the way the notion of being a wife and mother became a position of low degree. Raising children is not considered a career in itself. Our society has suffered because of this change in perspective.

      Working Woman

      Proverbs 31 (NIV)
13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. 14 She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar.15 She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls 16 She considers a field and buys it, out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. 19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers.

This passage describes the modern woman. She works to take care of her family. She may own a business, or have a career. The Biblical woman clearly has many priorities and her day is filled with projects that further her financial and personal interests. She clearly understands the principles of business and and knows how to make a profit. She is a hard worker and works at night if necessary. She is always doing something to reach her goals.

      Woman Volunteering

      Proverbs 31 (NIV)

20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.

The Biblical woman is a giver and interested in charity. She takes the time to care for the poor and needy in her life. Today's woman is very caring and interested in volunteering in many worthy causes. There will always be the poor who need help.

      Proverbs 31 (NIV)

21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet.22 She makes coverings for her bed;she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.24 She makes linen garments and sells them and supplies the merchants with sashes.

This woman is prepared for winter or any other emergency. She makes sure her family is attired appropriately for the weather and her home has been cared for and well decorated. She honors her husband because she does not need to challenge his position in the community. In fact she is very supportive of her husband and is proud of his accomplishments because they reflect on her.

Take a careful look at verse 24. Once again it is stated that she produces a product and sells it to the merchants. The Bible is absolutely supportive of a woman participating in society by running a business or manufacturing products. This is mentioned more than once in this chapter. It is an important statement on what was expected of the woman of the day. It also gives today's woman an insight into her contemporary position.

      Proverbs 31 (NIV)

25 She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. 26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. 27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.

Today's woman is hard working. Many women are life long learners. These women take care of their homes, families, pursue a career and keep the household running. Most contemporary women cannot find enough hours in the day to get everything done.

Having the ability to laugh is a great advantage to today's woman. Sometimes when life has fallen around your ears and everything is in chaos during your day, just step back and laugh. In the end these things are passing and a good laugh will get you through.

      Contemporary Family

      Proverbs 31 (NIV)

28 Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:
29 "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.31 Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

Our youth oriented culture gives women the belief that they have to appear young to compete. To an extent this is true, but as it says, charm can be deceptive and in spite of our best efforts beauty fades away. Only the kindness and loving relationships we nurture in our lives will last.
