Things You'll Need:
-
Step 1
Decide what you want your domain name to be. It will be www.whateveryouchoose plus the domain name extension. If your domain name will be used for selling items or products, you should choose the domain name extension .com (commercial) or .net (networking). If you are an organization that will not be selling you should use .org (organization). Providing information only? Go for .info (information). The .gov extension can only be used by government agencies. You want to choose a domain name that is as close as possible to the services you will be offering. This will help search engines drive traffic to your website once it is up and running. An example is that if you will be selling unique antique furniture, you could choose something like bobsantiquefurniture.com instead of bobsmithsenterprises.com.
-
Step 2
Visit a website that will allow you to register a domain name. Two of the popular sites to register a domain name are Netfirms at $6.99 per year and Go Daddy for $9.99 per year. See the Resources below and click on the link to go to their website.
-
Step 3
Enter the domain name that you chose into the website's search box to see if the domain name you desire to register is available. If your domain name is not available, the website will give you other alternate suggestions for a domain name. You can choose their suggestions or think of a new domain name to register, typically a slight variation of your first choice. Keep searching until you find available domain name that is suiting.
-
Step 4
Register your domain name by selecting it and following the steps to enter your credit card information. You can also use debit cards that have credit card logos. Some websites might allow you register a domain name using an electronic check as well.
-
Step 5
Print your invoice showing registration of your domain name. Put it away for safekeeping in case you need it in the future.
