Things You'll Need:
- rice cooker, 2 cups milk OR cream, 3 eggs, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
-
Step 1
On a hot day, custard can be made in a rice cooker without heating up the house by running the oven.
-
Step 2
First, I beat 3 eggs very well.
In a separate bowl, I beat 2 cups of milk (or cream) with 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla. I find that if I try to beat the sugar into the eggs that it does not dissolve very well, so, I now beat it into the milk. -
Step 3
Beat the 2 liquids together, set the strainer over the rice cooker, and pour in the custard. This removes any unbeaten eggs white and results in a smoother custard.
-
Step 4
I found out that custard heated on "Cook" is too hot, as the custard will boil and the smooth consistency is lost. And, if I try to cook it on "Warm" the heat is not great enough to cook the custard.
Instead, I now set the rice cooker on "Heat" for 5 minutes and then leave it on "Warm" until the custard is cooked.
