How to Replace a Car / Vehicle Title

Most states require a vehicle title to transfer ownership. Some states, known as "title holding" states, send a vehicle's title to a lender rather than to the car's registered owner. When the borrower satisfies the loan, the lender should send the title promptly. If you live in one of these states, you cannot apply for a duplicate title. Otherwise, you can go to a motor vehicle office to order your title or request it through a motor vehicle website if your state allows it.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your vehicle information and acceptable proof of identification. You'll need your vehicle identification number (VIN), found on a registration or insurance card, and either a driver's license, passport, military identification or another proof of identification if your state allows it.

    • 2

Go to a motor vehicle office with your vehicle information and identification. Ask which form you must complete to apply for a duplicate title. Complete the form and submit it to a motor vehicle representative.

    • 3

Pay any fees associated with the duplicate title application. If your state doesn't offer an instant title, ensure your address is correct. Ask how long you'll wait to receive the title so you can follow up with your state motor vehicle department if you don't receive it on time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Go to your state's motor vehicle website to determine if you can order the duplicate title online rather than in person.

  • If you don't have a picture identification, check your state's website for acceptable forms of identification. Some states allow drivers to bring a birth certificate, Social Security card and proof of address to confirm identity.
