      First you must get copies of your credit report. Their are three companies that have your credit information. They are experian, equifax and transunion. You are able to access all these companies online.

      Second, be prepared to pay for a copy of your report. If you have not received a free credit report this year you can get a free copy from annualcreditreport.com by law you are allowed one free per year. You will have to choose which of the three companies you would like a copy from. Unfortunately you will have to pay for the other two.

      After you have purchased copies of your credit report look and see what is on it. Make sure that accounts you paid off are shown as paid. Also make sure that if it says you missed a payment that you really did. In the past I had a bad debt that was not legit. It was for a car repossession that I never had. I was wondering why I wasn't able to get approved for credit.

      If you find items on your report that is not correct, go directly to the site. Most of them have a section on their site where you can dispute each item. If not you are able to dispute via mail. It is very important that you make sure that everything is correct because they do make mistakes.

  • Some of the credit agencies offer a free report if you sign up for monthly monitoring of your credit report. It is very pricey and not necessary. Also be aware because if you don't cancel they will continue to charge your credit card monthly.
