  1. Step 1

Chairs that get moved around allot on wooden floors can cause scratches that can easily be fixed by yourself in most cases. The best way to prevent the scratches is to use rubber or metal tips on the legs of the chairs.

  2. Step 2

For a lightly scratched wooden floor a liquid solvent or a paste wax can hide the scratch. For a more severe scratch going over it with some steel wool and a solvent can fix the scratch. If there are many scratches on a polyurethane based wooden floor you will need to use a sander and put a fresh coat of polyurethane on it.

  3. Step 3

If you have a deep scratch remove the old wax with solvent and blend the scratch with the surrounding wood by filling the scratch with a wood toned crayon(which can usually be found at any hardware store or try a wood stain ,wax or a wood putty. if your floor has a varnish, polyurethane or a shellac finish use the same type of coat on it. sometimes you may have to put a fresh coat on the whole floor. Sometimes lemon juice can hide a lite scratch also. when using a brush try to use a uniform brush stroke going the same way as the rest of the finish. when using wood putty don't forget to sand down the putty to give the floor a nice even finish. I hope this will be helpful.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add the rubber tips or metal tips to chairs to prevent the scratches to begin with and if using a rolling chair use a clear mat or an area rug.
  • Sometimes the fumes from the solvents can be harmful so use in a well ventilated area or use a mask to prevent any of the fumes from causing you any harm.
