Instructions

    • 1

Go to City Hall to the business division to apply for a business license. Even if you're going to do business in other states, you need a business license in the area where you live and have your main office (many car haulers use their home as their office but still need a business license for this address). Cities and states vary on the exact requirements for a business license; all of this information can be found at City Hall.

    • 2

Decide how many cars you want to haul at once. If you only haul in your local area, you can haul one car at a time. If you want to get more business and haul cars in a large area or across the country, you need to be able to haul five or six cars at once.

    • 3

Buy a truck and car trailer equipped to haul the amount of cars you want. If you want to haul five or six cars, you need a double car hauler. This trailer loads three cars on the bottom and two or three on top. A heavy duty truck will be needed, such as a 3500 Chevrolet diesel or a Ford 350 Superduty diesel. Diesels offer more power for daily towing than gas-powered trucks. The truck should be new or only slightly used and in great shape. The purchase of a truck and trailer for your business can be written off your taxes for business expenses.

    • 4

Get insurance for your truck and car hauler. Also get coverage for the vehicles you're transporting. Speak to your insurance agent on the type of policy needed. The agent can also provide you with documentation that must be kept in your truck at all times.

    • 5

Go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and inquire about what type of driver's license you need for the truck and trailer you have. Some laws require that you have a CDL (commercial driver's license) license when hauling large trailers.

    • 6

Contact local car dealerships, including used dealerships, and give them a business card and your information. Many people use eBay and other online car auctions to buy vehicles. These cars all have to be transported by a car hauling service like yours. Make a deal with dealerships to haul the cars they sell, no matter where the buyer lives. This is a great way to get repeat business. The dealership can also give you a good reference when you want to work with other dealerships.

    • 7

Advertise on the Internet by buying ads on car auction sites like eBay, AutoTrader.com and other car auction sites. These places sell hundreds of cars every day that have to be hauled.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hire an accountant for tracking business expenses and purchases. An accountant can save you a lot of money and advise you on what expenses can be tax deductible and what expenses must be paid.

  • Never haul cars for others without having the proper insurance coverage, or waivers signed by the owners of the cars to not hold you liable for damage.
