Things You'll Need:
- a willingness to change
-
Step 1
. Determine how you will start being yourself. This will be the first major step in learning more about who you really are. The inside you, as well as the outside part of you that the world sees fits together to make up the real person that is you.
Decide that you will no longer close the doors on all the negatives that are also a part of you. Understand that you must be honest with yourself and accept all of you, the warts, the wrinkles, the ugliness and all the denials up to now you have not accepted.
Find a way of learning about yourself. Read, talk to others who are sincere and who will help, but find time to get in tough in with yourself and your thoughts. -
Step 2
First, make a list of the you you want to be. Give your reasons and write and write and write about the person you desire to be. Then on another sheet of paper write down the person you think you are. Edit these two first starts as new truths present themselves. You will mark out some of the notes on the want to be list as they assume less importance. As these list grow longer or shorter and you, with a help of some guidance such as bible reading, listening to favorite speakers on the subject, talking to friends, will be getting a better understanding of yourself and will from close association become better friends.
-
Step 3
Tear up the first two lists after you decide keeping such a list is a little silly. You will decide this because you are seeing that the first list, the one of who you want to be, is shorter than the one you are finding out you are. A few of the desirable you are discovering you already have. The most delightful part of learning more about you is your increasing satisfaction of being who you are. You are tolerating the old you, the negative grumbling and non-important person you thought you were because you are now replacing the negatives with the truth. In other words you are learning how to change the things you can about yourself and are accepting the others. (Supposedly from the writings of St. Francis)

Step 4
The final step is the best one of all. You have brought your expectations down to a level where you can deal with them. It would have been impossible to have reached the perfection of the person you thought you wanted to be. You are now settling for a best friend, yourself, and your heavenly guide. Depending on your religion or your belief, you have now found how to get in touch with reality. You are learning everyone on earth has problems and a mature sincere person must learn to live with them.
The first big truth you are discovering is that you were created for a purpose and it is not to go through life wanting to be someone else. You are now in touch with yourself and you are learning more about yourself day by day. -
Step 5
The part of the discovery of self is learning how to accept and to not you get in your own way. That sounds somewhat ridiculous but that is essentially what we do when we refuse to be who we are and insist on following who we think we want to be. That in itself is an absurdity. It is against the whole concept of why you were created in the first.
What is that? The secret to understanding yourself! You were created to love and to serve God and to be happy with him in heaven. That's it. Believe it or not. On earth we are being fine tuned so that when our trials here on earth are finished, we will be moving on. Hopefully on toward our creator.
