Things You'll Need:
- Litter Box
- Litter
- Time and patience
-
Step 1
Wait till your ferret goes potty before taking them out of the cage. When a ferret first wakes up they almost always have to go potty.
-
Step 2
Confine your ferret to a small section of the cage to start. It helps if your ferret is in close proximity to his litter box, it reminds him to use it. So if your cage has multiple levels, block the others so he has to remain on one floor.
-
Step 3
Place litter boxes in corners. Ferrets love to go potty in corners.
-
Step 4
Watch your ferret for signs that he is about to go potty (backing into a corner with tail raised), and quickly pick him up and place him in the litter box.
-
Step 5
Reward your ferret with verbal praise or a small treat when he uses the box.
-
Step 6
Place litter boxes in just about every corner of the house to start. You can slowly start to remove the extras when you determine which corners your ferret prefers to use.
-
Step 7
Keep the litter boxes clean. Ferrets will ignore using the box if it is too dirty.
-
Step 8
Some ferrets will not share litter boxes, if this is the case with your ferrets, you will have to provide extra boxes.

on 10/22/2009 Good article- better than the others!
I'd like to qualify your warning about clumping litters though. SOFT-clumping, PLANT-BASED litters like Swheat Scoop and Original World's Best Cat Litter are fine.
