Things You'll Need:

  • A Dorm Room Of Course
  1. Step 1

One of the most famous and best ways of maximizing the space in your dorm room is to loft your bed. If you have a double room you can lift one or both of the beds. Lofting your bed gives you space for other furniture and things like a futon, TV, refrigerator, or microwave. Lofts can often be purchased or rented through the college. If you can not do this, you can also build your own loft using simple hand tools. Before building a loft you may want to check with your college to make sure that you can have lofts in the room.

  2. Step 2

If you have a bed on the round or have a futon you can get storage containers that fit under the bed or futon. This will give you a good amount of storage space while not having to take up extra space. Before putting one under a futon make sure that the mechanics of the futon will allow for the container to stay under it while it switches from couch to a bed and vice versa.

  3. Step 3

Maximizing your desk space is a good way of making your room more efficient. You can do things such as add a shelving unit above your desk that stands on the desk. This will give you space for all of your supplies such as paper or it can give you a place for some of your multi media like CDs and DVDs.

  4. Step 4

The walls of your room can be used for many things. Most colleges have very strict rules about attaching things to the walls. The answer to getting around these rules is a line of products that 3M has designed. They are called COMMAND hooks and they are sold at most retail stores. They use a non-permanent adhesive putty that will not tear up your walls and will provide hooks to hang a lot of stuff on. The also have baskets and shelving units that use this same technology.

  5. Step 5

As for your microwave and refrigerator, there is an easy fix to these two appliances. You can put your microwave on top of you refrigerator to provide more space in your room. This may seem like an obvious thing to do but some people may find it helpful.

  6. Step 6

For all of your entertainment needs, one piece of furniture can store all of these pieces of electronics very easy. By using an entertainment center you can keep things such as your TV, DVD player, or any video game consoles all together and stored away. There are many types of entertainment centers and most places such as Target and Wal-Mart have cheap ones that will do for your college career.
