Things You'll Need:
- Computer
- Time to Research
- Printer
- Credit card to sign up for another site's web hosting and/or a domain name
-
Step 1
Print a hard copy back up of your website.
Printing a hard copy of your website is always a good idea in case something occurs. The printed hard copy will be very valuable to guarantee that you do not lose any valuable information. -
Step 2
Save an html copy of your website.
Go into the html of all your geocities files by following the directions in your control panel. Go into the html code for each page to cut and paste it into notepad or some other program on your computer as an electronic html back up plan.
In Geocities, you will need to use Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste. -
Step 3
Look for another web hosting service. Research the prices, details, and terms of service.
It would be helpful to decide whether you want to keep all your pages and to consider whether you want to add more pages in the future. Is your site a type of site that grows on a regular basis? Will you want your own domain name now?
If you blog on your site, there are many other free spaces to blog. There are a few free business websites as well as other free publishing websites if you have a site with articles. Make sure to check all the terms and rights of sites that are free - sometimes by using a free site you are giving them exclusive, non-exclusive, or display rights. However, if you continue to read the fine print, you might notice the same terms under non-exclusive and display (making display not just display but another non-exclusive).
It might also be helpful to keep a little checklist of the web hosting services you check out, their pricing, and the important details about their plans as you research so you don't forget. -
Step 4
Now decide how you will transition your site and to which service.
Will you continue your site? Will you turn it into a blog on a free blog site? Will you find another free site or free business site? Will you pay for web hosting? If you will pay, how much will you pay?
Once you have answered these questions, make the arrangements to open the new account and begin the process of movie your information over. If you have a lot of information to move, it might take awhile; however, those digital files that you saved will come in handy since you will be able to cut and paste the information.

on 4/30/2009 They are closing their free sites down probably due to costs. If they close them all down and 1/4 of the people sign up for their paid services, then they have just forced a larger profit before the year is over.

For those who have a Free Yahoo Geocities site still open, they will want to plan their transition so they can find the best services to fit their needs.
