The useful and impressive art of opening bottles WITHOUT a bottle opener. Start with a lighter and improvise from there...

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 bottled beverage
  • 1 butane lighter
  • 2 hands
  1. Step 1

Grab the bottle around the neck just below the cap.
Remember, you're never going to be touching the cap.

  2. Step 2

Holding the lighter horizontally in the other hand, insert the BOTTOM of the lighter (surface it stands on) BETWEEN the bottom of the cap and your top finger (presumably index).

  3. Step 3

Holding the bottle tightly, especially with the top finger, pry the cap off with the lighter. You are moving the TOP of the lighter DOWN, pivoting on your top finger holding the bottle. As the top end of the lighter goes down, pivoting on your top finger, the bottom of the lighter forces the edge of the cap UP.

(Imagine a paint can lid= cap, the prying screwdriver= lighter, the lip of the can pried against= your top finger holding the bottle)

You may experience some gas escape if you only partially open the cap.
don't let it catch you by surprise!
If so, get another "bite" and finish popping off the cap.

  4. Step 4

    ENJOY SAID BEVERAGE!!!

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice makes perfect! You soon realize that a lighter is only one of millions of potential bottle openers. REMEMBER: this is an exercise in LEVERAGE and FULCRUM
  • I bloodied my knuckles trying to open bottles with lighters until I was told to use the lighter as a pry-bar, pivoting on my finger.
