Things You'll Need:
- Potted tomato plant
-
Step 1
Tomato plants should be planted when the low temperature is 55 degrees or warmer.
The ideal planting day is overcast, as the hot sun will be a shock to the plant, and being moved to a new location is enough of a shock to the plant. If you must plant on a sunny day, try to protect the roots from the sun, as it will damage them. -
Step 2
A tomato has the rather rare ability to grow roots all up and down the stem: for this reason tomatoes are often planted more deeply that they have been grown in the pot. By planting them more deeply, the roots will grow more deeply more quickly. Just clip off any little leaves that would be otherwise buried, and plant as deeply as you think is wise!
Press the soil gently down to tuck the plant in, and THEN water the plant. Do not press on the soil AFTER you water the seedling, if your soil has a high clay content that can turn the soil into an adobe brick and the tomato will have a much harder time getting established! -
Step 3
Remember to handle seedlings by their leaves instead of by their leaves: if the main stem is broken lower than the leaves then the plant WILL die, but, if a few leaves are broken off the plant will grow more.
