Switching between temperature scales isn't as hard as you might think.

Scientists and school children are no longer the only ones who need to convert temperatures between the centigrade, or Celsius, and Fahrenheit scales. With the increased accessibility to the Internet, you may find yourself with recipes and other materials from countries that use a different scale. Once you remember that the freezing point on the Celsius scale is 0 degrees, while the Fahrenheit has a 32 degree freeze point, the calculation isn't complicated. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Celsius to Fahrenheit Conversion

    • 1

Write down the Celsius degrees measurement. For example, write down 50 degrees C.

    • 2

Multiply that number by 9/5. Multiply 50 by 9/5 to get 90. This process is the same as multiplying by 9 and then dividing by 5 (50 x 9 = 450/5 = 90).

    • 3

Add 32 to the product. In the example, 90 + 32 = 122. This is the Fahrenheit equivalent of 50 degrees C.

    Fahrenheit to Celsius Conversion

    • 4

Write down the Fahrenheit measurement. For example, use 100 degrees F.

    • 5

      Subtract 32. For example, 100 degrees - 32 = 68.

    • 6

Multiply by 5/9. The example would be 68 x 5/9 = 37.8. Alternately, multiply by five and then divide by nine so the equation would read 68 x 5 = 340/9 = 37.8.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember the formulas for the conversions:

  • F = (Celsius degrees x 9/5) + 32

  • C = (Fahrenheit degrees - 32) x 5/9
