Step 1
The first part of building a stacked stone wall is to select the color, texture and style of stone you want to use.
-
Step 2
Draw out your area and measure it. Now you can simply pile up your stones hoping everything will hang together, which is how the majority of people build a dry stacked stone wall, or you can do your research. The ancient art of stone masonry deals with fitting each stone carefully into place so it is balanced and solid. You can take courses in building stacked stone walls or get in touch with experts. (Please check under Resources below.)
-
Step 3
One essential characteristic of a successful stacked stone is the fact that the base will be slightly wider than the rest of the wall. Since you will not be cementing your stones together it is important that the rocks are well balanced and don't shift over time.
-
Step 4
A stacked stone wall will create a complementary blend if you use local stone. A nice contrast can be designed by using attention-getting colors and textures. Make sure you have calculated all the stone you will need before ordering it, particularly if it is being shipped in. Different lots can be quarried in different areas and look quite dissimilar if you order another delivery later.
-
Step 5
You can study the proper ways of how to build a stacked stone wall, or you can find a specialist to build your walls. Most masons are not experts at this kind of building. It IS a specialty so you should look for an expert in stacking stone.
