1
Arrange the stones around your yard, placing each one in the location where you want it. Rearrange the stones until you reach the desired look.
-
2
Run the trowel around all edges of the stones, marking the location of each one on the ground. Dig the trowel into the ground, creating an outline around the stones. Lift the stones off the ground and set them to one side.

-
3
Push the end of the trowel into the ground at an angle, making sure that it gets under the grass. Scrape the trowel along the ground, lifting up the grass. Use the trowel to remove both the grass and the top layer of the dirt.
-
4
Pour a thin layer of builder's sand on top of the grass. Add enough sand so that when you place the stones back, each one sits evenly with the surrounding ground. Depending on the slope or slant of your yard, you may need more sand in some areas and less in others.
-
5
Place each stone back on the ground and gently press down with your hands. Line the edges of the stone with a small amount of mulch, which keeps the man-made stones from moving or tilting.
