Most of us have experienced the joy of getting a new puppy. It's exciting, heart warming and wonderful- until nightfall. When a puppy is separated from its mother, siblings, and "other" family, it can be a traumatic time. Imagine being all alone in a new place where nothing is familiar and everything is scary.

New puppies need to be reassured that everything will be okay. Some puppies need more assurance than others.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A soft blanket
  • A new puppy
  • Love
  1. Step 1

Your new best friend should have its own place in your home. Some people choose to use a kennel, but a comfortable blanket or large pillow will be fine. Try to put it in a quiet place- this is your puppy's retreat.

  2. Step 2

When it's time for bed, tuck your puppy in as you would a small child. Use a loving tone and make sure he's snuggled in. Sometimes an extra pillow or stuffed animal will help him feel more secure (remember that he's used to sleeping in a pile with his siblings).

  3. Step 3

If your puppy cries- and he probably will- try tucking him one more time just to let him know he's not alone. You might have to let him cry for a little bit, but he should calm down soon.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be patient! Your puppy is probably scared!
  • Puppies are easily "spoiled" just like babies, try not to do anything you wouldn't be willing to do every night.
