The swine flu is a real concern for nearly everyone world wide however, there is no need to panic. The vast majority of people who do get the swine flu make a full recovery in a few days with no lasting effects. There are certain precautions you can take to reduce your risk of catching the swine flu and also reducing the severity of the illness should you be become sick.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wash your hands. This may sound like common knowledge however, most people do not properly wash their hands or wash them frequently enough to prevent illness. Antibacterial soap has not proven to actually kill any more germs than regular soap and can irritate sensitive skin. So, don't be too concerned with they type of soap you use, focus more on the way you wash your hands and the frequency you wash throughout the day. You should wash your hands for around 1 full minute with warm, soapy water throughout the day- before contact with food, after contact with the public, and of course after you use the restrooms.

  2. Step 2

Stay home if you are sick. This is not a time to be playing the hero. If you are sick, avoid contact with others as much as possible. Stay home from work, stay away from stores and other public places (yes, the world will be ok without you for a day or two).

  3. Step 3

Keep your kids home from school. If your child has a fever or flu like symptoms, keep them away from other children. This is a huge way germs and sickness is spread. If you are in doubt, keep your child home.

  4. Step 4

Look after the elderly. If you have a Grandparent, elderly neighbor or friend, check on them often and try to remind them to wash their hands and keep their living area as free from germs as possible (remember to be tactful to keep their pride in tact).

  5. Step 5

Finally, if you do get sick, do not panic. If you do come down with the swine flu, make sure to see your doctor first. Then, take your vitimans, drink lots of water, and get lots of rest. This will make a difference in your recovery.

Tips & Warnings
  • when washing your hands, try singing the "Happy Birthday" song or "Twinkle, twinkle little star" to ensure you are washing long enough
  • Remembering not to panic is KEY
  • Keeping up with healthy living habits BEFORE you get sick will make a big difference in both prevention and treatment should you get the flu
  • If you suspect the Swine Flu, do not wait to see your doctor
  • If you get the flu, do not make contact with other people if at all possible
