One of the final steps in any bathroom remodel -- from a quick refresh of finishes or a whole to-the-studs gutting -- is to install spouts and faucets. The bathtub spout is no exception. While there are many different types of spouts, they all install using the same basic technique. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Pipe joint compound

Instructions

      Locate the spout nipple extending from the wall. This usually looks like a metal pipe with threads on the end.

      Squeeze some out some pipe joint compound from its tube onto the threaded part of the spout nipple. Apply about the same amount as you would use for toothpaste on a toothbrush. Apply this all the way around the spout nipple where you will install the bathtub spout.

      Thread the bathtub spout carefully onto the nipple. Eventually the spout becomes to hard to turn by hand.

      Once you can no longer continue installing the bathtub spout by hand take a long screwdriver and stick it in the nozzle of the spout and use the extra leverage to tighten it completely.

      Add a thin bead of silicone caulking around where the bathtub spout meets the tile to seal it.
