How to treat Sunburns, the painful evidence of fun in the sun.

How to treat Sunburns. Ah summer, never ending sun and relaxation. Also the pain and sting of the dreaded sunburn. Since outside is where you want to be at least know the very basics of treating sunburns.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cool water
  • Aloe vera
  • Clothing that breathes
  • Various over the counter medicines.
  1. Step 1

All right lets start with the basics. A sunburn is a 1st degree burn (more serious burns can be 2nd and 3rd degree and treated similarly, but medical advice should be sought). A burn is generally treated by running cool water. Take frequent cool baths or showers. Also wear clothing that breathes, this allows skin to radiate the excess heat that is generated by a burn.

  2. Step 2

Next try soothing lotions such as aloe vera. These should be applied as long and as often as necessary.

  3. Step 3

For over the counter medicines look for the following: Lidocaine or Benzocaine, Tylenol (for the pain), and Aspirin (for the pain, do not use for children).
A few home remedies can help. One calls for a wash cloth soaked in cool but not cold milk, this allows to soothe the burn and to form a layer of protein to protect and soothe as well. And the lactic acid helps with the inflammation.
Another one that could work (results vary) is shaving cream, just put directly onto the burn.
Also many vinegar recipes, I suggest looking online to find the best vinegar recipes to use on sunburns.

  4. Step 4

If you develop a fever or nausea or the sunburn persists for way too long, go to the doctor immediately. Remember aspirin is not to be used with children and most over the counter medicines should not be used on children younger than 2. Remember to read the directions of all medicines. Hope this helps at least a little.
