How to Set Up a Cheap Gym at Home
Many people enjoy working out at the gym, but want to save money on expensive gym memberships. According to a CNBC article, the average gym membership typically costs between $40 and $50 per month, along with initiation fees, and many people pay at least $800 a year in overall member dues. If you need to cut back on bills, but want to maintain a sleek physique, you can create a home gym that won't break the bank.

Choose the right home gym location. Most people don't have extra empty rooms around the house, but you don't have to have an entire room dedicated to your home gym. Your guest room or home office can double as a gym if you use the space efficiently. For example, move the guest bed up against the wall to create a bigger workout space, and store your equipment in the closet or under the bed when you're not using it. Some people assign a specific area of their garage for their home gym, as well. Choose a space that is big enough for you to do your favorite exercises, such as yoga or weightlifting. If the room or area isn't well-ventilated, add a fan to help with cooling down.

2
Save money on home gym furnishings. If you are into strength-training, you'll usually need a weightlifting bench, squat bar, weightlifting bar and plates or weights. Choose a weightlifting utility bench that has a squat bar, as well as thigh and ankle roller pads, already included. You can often find these types of workout equipment for much cheaper prices if you buy them used.

Eliminate unnecessary gym equipment. You may not need that bulky, and expensive, treadmill or elliptical machine if you don't already own one. Go outside for a jog the old-fashioned way for free during nice weather, and use other types of cardio workouts when it's too cold or hot outside. For example, you can set up a TV with a DVD player and choose from a wide variety of cardio exercises.

Use cheap gym equipment. There are many types of workout equipment and tools that are inexpensive and effective at toning those muscles. A yoga mat will give you the necessary padding to start your own home practice. You can find jump ropes and resistance bands at your local sports supply store for usually less than $10. Other examples of cheap gym tools include exercise balls and dumbbells. These types of equipment don't take up much space either.
