One of the benefits of being a Mac user is the screenshot. This allows you to take a picture of anything on your desktop - or of the desktop itself. It's easy to do, and a very valuable tool!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mac operating system.
  1. Step 1
Command key on a newer Mac keyboard.

Command key on a newer Mac keyboard.

A screenshot consists of pressing three keys in successive order. The first key is Command (located to the left of the space bar, with an open apple, which is an older version of the Mac keyboard, or simply a word that says "Command").

  2. Step 2
    The left shift key.

    The left shift key.

Next, press the shift key (typically easier to press the left shift key).

  3. Step 3
    The 4 key.

    The 4 key.

    Finally, press the 4 key.

  4. Step 4

Once these keys are pressed simultaneously, an icon should pop up that looks like a target site. Use your mouse or laptop touchpad to drag and click what you would like to take a screenshot of.

  5. Step 5

Moving the target site will draw a box around the screen, highlighting in a light gray the portion that will be in the screenshot. Once you highlight your selected part, release the keys. The computer should make a noise similar to that of taking a photograph.

  6. Step 6

To access your screenshot, look on your desktop. The screenshot should be saved as Picture 1 (ensuing shots will be numbered as well). The file name is .png, which is compatible with Macs and most desktops for file sharing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Screenshots are great for showing others what you are viewing on your screen (for example, if you want to show someone something you are looking at). They are also useful for taking pictures that otherwise cannot be pulled off onto your desktop.
  • I have found many uses for screenshots. For example, I take a screenshot of my company's phone list and leave it easily accessible without having to pull up the entire file.
  • You cannot take a screenshot while a dvd is in play mode. This is a function to protect copyrighted movies.
  • Sometimes screenshots don't work on your first try (they definitely aren't an exact science). You have to listen for the camera sound to know it has really worked.
