1
Complete a state-approved Boating Safety Course. Many schools throughout the state offer this course; just make sure that the school you choose has been approved by the Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. Online courses are available as well; however, they must culminate in an in-person final exam.

2
Go to your nearest state Motor Vehicle Commission center after you have successfully completed the Boating Safety Course. Bring the certificate stating you passed your boating safety course and the documents needed to pass the state's six-point identification verification. The latter may include items like a birth certificate, passport or utility bill --- download the MVC's brochure on this system to make sure you bring the correct combination of documents.

3
Bring your boat's title if the vessel is more than 12 feet long.
-
4
Pay the current licensing fees at the MVC using cash, money orders, checks or MasterCard, Visa or American Express.
