Face it -- you wouldn't be here without your mother, and Mother's Day is a fine time to remember and thank her. The first Mother's Day in America was begun with Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation in 1870. And ever since, millions of mothers are celebrated with cards, flowers, gifts, dinners and other methods of celebration. Instructions

    • 1

Gather the various items you'll need -- you can find many of these already in your home. Get creative with what's on hand. Print copies of your mother's photograph in 4 by 5 inch or 5 by 7 inch sizes. Tape or glue them back to back to use in a variety of ways -- for example, in photo clip-stands around a center candle.

    • 2

Fill a bowl with her favorite candies or use shiny rocks and pebbles in a bowl of water. Surround the bowl with 3 wine glasses or votive holders into which you've tucked flowers from your garden. Stream several ribbons through and around the glassware.

    • 3

Cut fresh flowers and place into a vase in the center of the table. Set lower glasses around it with votive candles to light when ready. You can also color the water in all the glassware and omit the candles. Tie raffia or ribbons around the glassware.

    • 4

Wrap a few small items in pretty paper. Hand-made papers work nicely and you can wrap anything -- then group 3 to 5 small wrapped items in the center around a photograph of mom. Write something like, "She's the best gift ever" on long strips of paper or a card to accompany the grouping.

    • 5

Take one bud vase and place a single long-stemmed rose or carnation in it. Tie the vase with pretty ribbons. Add some greenery on the table around the vase, such as ivy, fresh herbs or ferns. Sometimes the simplest centerpieces are the most beautiful.

    • 6

Bake a cake and ice it. Write Happy Mother's Day on it. Set the cake on a piece of fabric (hemmed or raw) that is cut to the same shape as the cake, but several inches wider. Wrap jasmine vines or ivy around the cake on top of the fabric. Tuck in a few colorful flowers.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can turn almost anything into a centerpiece if you're short on time and money. Look around your home. Find symbolic items that tell a story about your mother's life.

  • Groupings of odd-numbered items seem harmonious, but you can also do multiples of things in opposition, such as two tapered candles opposite each other and two photos on facing clip stands.

  • To personalize any centerpiece, use a cherished item or something fun from her youth. Write or type quotations or her favorite sayings and place them on papers around a central item. These are all very easy, quick and inexpensive ways to say, "I love you mom."
