Step 1

Never blatantly hit on a single mom while in front of her children. This can be awkward for both the mother and for the children. Trust me, she will be bombarded with questions as soon as you walk away "Mommy who was that man?" or worse, they can get upset about a man other than "daddy" talking to their mom. Some women are actually very offended by men approaching them while having dinner out with their children etc.
Step 2

For phone conversations, try to call after 9:00pm when she has most likely tucked her children into bed and she can now focus on a conversation on the phone with you.
Step 3

Do not pick her up at her house for a first date. She will most likely want to protect her children from her dating life so be understanding of this and do not suggest to pick her up.
Step 4

Once it is established that you want to see each other again and begin casual dating; be understanding that she most likely cannot have spontaneous dates with you. i.e. You call her up at 6:00pm asking if she can see a 7:30 pm movie. Single mothers need to plan ahead to make sure they have babysitting arrangements. Plan for dates giving her 1-2 days notice.
Step 5

Do not push to meet her children. A good rule for single moms is that most do not like to introduce their children until they feel the relationship is serious; which could mean 3-6 months into the relationship. No need to introduce a man into the lives of their children that may only be around for 1-2 months.
Step 6

Do not suggest coming over to her place after the kids have fallen asleep to "hang out". Most mothers do not feel comfortable with this suggestion in case their children woke up and found some stranger making out with mommy on the couch.
Step 7

Be patient, be patient, be patient. Once the trust has been established and the single mother feels safe with you; she will allow you to meet her children. Then you will not only be establishing a relationship with her, but also with her children. Once you get to that point the dating will be so much easier because you can come over for dinner and a movie with the kids too or do outings as a "family".
