How to Ask Your Landlord to Fix a Mold Problem thumbnail
A mold problem could lead to severe health issues.

An excessive amount of mold in your home could cause several health-related issues, including coughing, difficulty breathing, eye irritation and lung infections. If you are renting a home that has a mold infestation, you should ask your landlord to remedy the issue immediately to prevent any additional health problems. Be sure you take the proper steps when contacting your landlord about the mold issue in your home, so your rights are upheld. The landlord should be held accountable for removing the mold and fixing any possible causes.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your landlord and inform him of the problem you are having. Explain the issue that you believe caused the mold and your concern regarding the safety of you and your family.

    • 2

Document the date you called your landlord along with any notes explaining what you discussed with her. Keep this information in a book that is reserved for keeping a log of your communication with them.

    • 3

Mail a certified letter to your landlord if he does not take action to correct the problem after the phone call. Keep the contents of the letter civil and explain the situation in detail. Keep a copy of the letter and the delivery confirmation receipt with your journal for your records.

    • 4

Contact your local Health Department if, after a certified letter, your landlord is still not responding to your request. Ask for a complaint form and submit it as soon as possible.

    • 5

Contact the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and ask to place a complaint against your landlord. Depending on the laws in your state you may be given access to free legal advice and legal representation should your case go to court.
