How to Remove Calluses from Feet

How to Remove Calluses from Feet thumbnail
Soaking and filing are two ways to remove calluses from feet.

Foot calluses are not only unsightly and annoying, but can be painful as well. The formation of a foot callus is caused by an accumulation of dead skin cells that form to protect the foot from excessive pressure and friction. Uneven distribution of weight, poor-fitting footwear and skin conditions can contribute to calluses. It is normal to have some calluses on the bottom of the foot, but if your calluses are causing you problems, remove them by following a few simple procedures. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Before bed, soak the affected foot in warm water mixed with Epsom salts. Soak the foot for at least 20 minutes to allow sufficient time for the callus to soften.

    • 2

After the callus has softened, use a callus file or a pumice stone to rub off the outer layers of the callus. Use gentle pressure to remove as much of the callus as possible.

    • 3

Mix together hydrocortisone cream and Whitfield's Ointment or a similar ointment containing salicylic acid and benzoic acid. Apply the mixture to the callused area.

    • 4

Place a plastic bag over the foot or wrap the foot in plastic wrap. Put a sock over the plastic. Leave the plastic and sock on the foot while you sleep.

    • 5

In the morning, remove the sock and plastic. Use a callus file or pumice stone to rub off as much of the outer layer of the callus as possible. Apply a good foot lotion to the area.

    • 6

Repeat these steps until the callus is removed and your feet are soft again. Depending on the thickness of the callus, this may take several daily treatments.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never try to cut off a callus.

  • If you are diabetic, seek attention from a podiatrist. Do not use this technique.
