Ferret Proof Your Home
Ferret Proof Your Home

It is important to throughly ferret proof your home before allowing your ferret out to play.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Close doors or put up ferret safe barricades on the rooms that you do not want your ferrets exploring.

  2. Step 2

Remove house plants from areas where ferrets can reach them. Many house plants can be poisonous if eaten by a curious ferret. Also many ferrets love to dig!

  3. Step 3

Block off the laundry room. Ferrets can become mixed in with laundry when the washing machine or dryer are used. There have also been many horror stories about ferrets disappearing out laundry vents as well.

  4. Step 4

Close the dishwasher and keep it closed while the ferrets are out playing. If you do have to run it thoroughly check it for ferrets before starting it.

  5. Step 5

Cut empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls to prevent ferrets from entrapping their heads and strangling themselves.

  6. Step 6

Place the lid on your trash can or pick up trash cans. There may be harmful things inside that your ferret could eat or be exposed to.

  7. Step 7

Place children's safety locks on all cabinets containing household cleaners. Ferrets are experts at getting into cabinets, and many household cleaners can be poisonous. Put all household cleaners securely in the locked cabinet before allowing the ferrets out to play.

  8. Step 8

Put away all pets that do not interact well with the ferrets.

  9. Step 9

Close the toilet lid to prevent a ferret from falling in and drowning.

  10. Step 10

Put away all rubber objects, sponges and Styrofoam products.

  11. Step 11

Block off the small areas under the kitchen stove, refrigerator and cabinets.

  12. Step 12

Carefully search the house for small openings that lead outside, you wouldn't want your ferret to escape.

  13. Step 13

Close all windows! Ferrets are escape artists and will sometimes scratch right through a screen. This is especially important on upper floors, ferrets aren't scared of heights and will attempt to jump out of a window.

  14. Step 14

When using reclining chairs, check to make sure the ferret isn't under the chair before folding it down. It is also important to use caution when sitting in rolling computer chairs.
