Looking to add a new ferret to your family, but don't know how to properly introduce them to one another? This article will teach you how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two Ferrets
  1. Step 1

Quarantine the new ferret for at least two weeks. Watch him/her for signs of illness. You don't want to risk making your current ferret(s) sick by exposing them to any illnesses or diseases the new ferret may be carrying.

  2. Step 2

Place the ferrets cages side by side for at least a few days. This will allow them to interact without the possibility of them harming each other.

  3. Step 3

Take something from each of their cages (like bedding or a hammock) and put it in the other one's cage. This will allow them to get use to each others scent.

  4. Step 4

Allow them outside of their cages for supervised play time. Be aware they may wrestle and even drag one another across the floor by the scruff of the neck. Don't be alarmed, that is how they determine who the alpha ferret will be. Only separate them if one seems to be getting stressed out, or if you see blood. Keep the play sessions short to start. Continually increase the amount of time they are allowed to play each day.

  5. Step 5

Move them into the same cage after that have consistently been playing together without a mishap.

Tips & Warnings
  • In rare instances some ferrets will just not get along, and will have to be kept separately
  • Never leave ferrets together without supervision during the first few weeks
  • Separate them if you see one is getting stressed out or if you see blood
