We all love to spoil our ferrets, giving treats to them is one way of doing so. Seeing their little faces light up when they are offered a yummy snack is enough to warm any ferret parents heart. But feeding your ferret too many or the wrong kind of treats can be detrimental to their health.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a treat that is meat based. Try to avoid feeding fruits and veggies, as ferrets do not digest plant matter. Even a small piece can cause a blockage in their narrow digestive tracks.

  2. Step 2

Look for a treat that does not contain dairy, chocolate, alcohol, candy, nuts, rawhide, black licorice, caffeine, sugar or salts. Any one of these ingredients can cause serious illness, and possibly death. Nuts and rawhide are indigestible and may cause a blockage. Sugary snacks can cause tooth decay and may mess with your pets blood sugar levels, especially with ferrets that have insulinoma. Chocolate, caffeine and alcohol are all poisonous and should be kept away from ferrets. Dairy products can cause upset stomach and diarrhea.

  3. Step 3

Avoid Feeding table scraps. Most meals prepared for humans contain seasoning and other ingredients that are not healthy for ferrets.

  4. Step 4

Boiled or cooked egg makes a wonderfully nutritious snack for your ferret!

  5. Step 5

    Cook some chicken without seasoning.

  6. Step 6

Go to the supermarket and pick up some Gerber's Second Stage Chicken Baby Food

  7. Step 7

Give your ferret a few small drops of ferretone or a pea sized drop of ferretvite.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never over feed treats, they should given only on occasion, not a daily basis.
