Feed Your Pet Ferret
Feed Your Pet Ferret

Ferrets are obligate carnivores, meaning they need to be fed a high quality meat based diet. It is important to feed your pet ferret a proper diet to help prevent illness.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Good Quality Ferret, Kitten or live diet
  • Spill Proof Dish
  • Water bottle with fresh water
  • Treats
  1. Step 1

Go to your local petstore or online petfood retailer and take a look at the ingredient list of thier foods. Choose a kitten or ferret food that contains higfh protein (at least 34%), high fat (at least 20%), low fiber and low carbs. Ferrets do not naturally eat plant matter, or fish, so both should be avoided. Always remember food found at grocery stores, is usually poor quality, and should not be feed to your pet ferret.

  2. Step 2

Choose a food that contains chicken, chicken meal, poultry or lamb as a main ingredient. It should also be naturally preserved with vitamin E and contain no artificial preservatives. Foods conataining grain or corn as a main ingredient should NEVER be used.

  3. Step 3

Make sure an ingredient called Taurine is included in the list. It is essential to your ferrets health.

  4. Step 4

If possible choose two differen't foods that meet the criteria listed above. Ferrets are picky eatters and should one suddenly become unavailable, you will have something else to fall back on.

  5. Step 5

Usually you do not need to supplement a ferrets diet with vitamins if you are feeding a good quality food. However a few drops of Ferretone or a pea sized dab of Ferretvite can be beneficial as a daily treat.

  6. Step 6

Now look for a good quality water bottle. Some people put out dishes of water for their ferrets, however from past experience my ferrets have always made a huge mess with water dishes, so I prefer a water bottle. Fresh, clean, cold water should be available to your ferret at all times. Change the water daily.

  7. Step 7

Now that you have your new food, place it in your ferrets cage (in a spill proof dish - ferrets like to make messes!)Feed your ferret free choice, fresh clean food should be available at all times. Ferrets usually do not overeat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not feed foods found in grocery stores
  • Check the ingredient list carefully
  • Have good quality food, and fresh water available at all times
  • Make sure the food contains Taurine
  • Feed a mixture of two good quality foods
