How to Patch a Stucco Wall
People often patch stucco walls for a variety of reasons. The most common being damage to the wall, and the removal of a door or window. Whatever the reason for patching a stucco wall there are standard steps to follow. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Trowel
- Spray Bottle
- Portland Cement
- Metal Lath
- Sand
- Water
- Masonry Cement
- White Cement

If needed prepare the area under the stucco. This would involve framing and insulating, as well as laying building paper next cut a piece of metal lath with tin snips and use galvanized roofing nails to attach it to the studs below.

Remove any loose stucco around the area you are patching by enlarging the opening if need be.

Next mix a batch of the base coat brown stucco. The normal formula for this is 3 parts sand, 2 parts portland cement, and 1 part masonry cement by volume. Add enough water so it has the texture of wet clay.

Begin to patch the stucco wall with this mixture. Apply a 3/8" layer, and wet it every 4-6 hours for the next 2 days with the mist from a spray bottle. After this period let it dry. Repeat this procedure until you are within 1/8" of the surface of the non patched area. About 1 day into the process take a nail and scratch the surface of the stucco to roughen it for the next layer.

Now begin to patch the stucco wall with the finish coat of stucco. The standard mixture for this is 1 part lime, 3 parts sand, and 6 parts white cement. If the surrounding stucco has any tint this is the time to add it to the mixture. Add water as before.

Using the trowel as before to apply the finish coat even with the surrounding wall. Apply texture as needed. Let dry as before.
