It is frustrating to deal with phone line connection issues. This can be an inconvenience, especially if you use your phone on a regular basis to conduct business. To troubleshoot a phone line connection, several things have to be taken into consideration, such as when did the problem start and what time of the day or night do the connection issues usually occur? To troubleshoot the issue, you may have to use trial and error to get to the source.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Telephone
  • Phone jack
  • New telephone cords
  • Wire maintenance plan
  1. Step 1

Determine when the connection issues started. Sometimes during a thunderstorm, the phone line may encounter damages from a lightning strike. Damages to the phone line can interrupt telephone service.

  2. Step 2

Plug your phone into another phone jack in the house, in order to isolate the problem. Sometimes the phone jack that the phone is plugged in may have a defect. If you experience the same issue with the phone line connection, move to the next step to resolve the issue.

  3. Step 3

Check to see if the telephone cords are loose. Having loose telephone cords can interfere with the phone line connection. Replace the old telephone cords with new ones.

  4. Step 4

Test another telephone by plugging it into the same phone jack. A defective telephone can be easily overlooked, when troubleshooting a phone line connection.

  5. Step 5

Call your telephone company for an appointment, to check the telephone wiring if you fail to resolve the issue. Most telephone companies offer a monthly wire maintenance plan for an additional monthly fee.

Tips & Warnings
  • To reduce the risk of electrical shock, do not attempt to troubleshoot a telephone connection during a thunderstorm.
