Avoid Free Credit Report Scams

Before you request a free annual credit report make sure you don't get taken by a scam. Here are ways to avoid free credit report scams and protect your personal information in the process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

THE only authorized source for the annual free credit report is AnnualCreditReport.com.

  2. Step 2

CHECK the spelling of the URL. Some imposter sites misspell Annual Credit Report hoping you don't notice.

  3. Step 3

SOME sites will redirect you to other sites that will try to sell you products, services and/or collect your personal information.

  4. Step 4

SOME sites use the phrase "free report" in their URL. Although they use "free report" in the URL, they will actually lure you into signing up for a free trial period. If you don't cancel, they will charge your credit card.

  5. Step 5

SOME sites mention "free credit scores" or "free credit monitoring." However, the Federal Trade Commission's authorized free credit report program does not offer such services.

Tips & Warnings
  • AnnualCreditReport.com will not send you email or call you requesting personal information.
  • Don't ever pay for a FREE annual credit report. By law you can receive this report for free every 12 months.
  • Providing your personal information to "imposter" sites can result in identity theft.
