Step 1
Look for oily skin. You have oily skin if your skin has a course texture and large pores. Look for large pores on your chin and nose. People with oily skin develop pimples and blackheads. Your face will have a oily shine one to two hours after cleansing. People with oily skin should cleanse their skin often. Splash cold water after cleansing to close the pores. Wear water-based makeup or makeup with low oil content.

Step 2
Look for dry skin. Your skin is dry if it has a fine texture with small pores. Dry skin feels tight and there may be fine lines around the mouth and eyes. The skin becomes red and chapped in cold weather. Your skin is dry if it takes at least six hours for a shine to appear on your nose and forehead. People with dry skin should use cleansing creams instead of soap to wash their face. Use moisturizers after cleansing and use oil based makeup.

Step 3
See if you have combination skin. You have combination skin if you have enlarged pores and blackheads around the nose, chin and forehead (oily areas). Your skin will feel dry around your eyes, cheeks and mouth. It will take three hours after cleansing for a shine to appear. If your skin is mostly oily, cleanse it as if you have oily skin. If it is mostly dry, cleanse it as if you have dry skin. You should use water-based cosmetics for combination skin.

Step 4
Look for normal skin. You have normal skin if you have a clear smooth texture with few enlarged pores or blemishes. People with normal skin can use any type of makeup. Use a moisturizer to prevent roughness.
