Bring water and menus to your table as soon as possible -- nobody likes to sit there very long waiting on a menu. Greet your diners with a big smile and, no matter how your day is going, always be friendly. Remember, you depend on those tips, and if you want good tips you have to work for them.

Keep an eye on your table. Whenever you see your customers stop reading or put down their menus, go to the table and get their orders as quickly as you can. When their food is ready; do not let it sit in the window -- get it to the table pronto.

After they have their food, leave them alone for about five minutes then go over and ask them if everything tastes OK and if they need refills on drinks. Leave them alone the rest of the time unless they need drink refills or if you notice them looking at you like they need something. Once they are done eating, make sure you take the dirty plates off their table.

Never let your customers wait for their check. Take it to them and say; "I'm just going to lay your check here, but take your time and thank you very much for visiting us today and come back and see us soon." If you follow these steps, most people will tip you fairly and will return.
