Milk your insurance. If you still have health insurance, but know it will soon run out, schedule any doctor's appointments for the next few months.

    • 2

Shop around for new health insurance. If you can do this before you lose your job (or make plans to go on your employer's COBRA plan), that's to your benefit. Otherwise, hit up local insurance agents to see what types of plans they offer. I highly recommend using ehealthinsurance.com for customizable plans, including temporary and low-cost insurance (see Resources below).

Eat well and exercise. This sounds like a no-brainer, but eating and exercise habits can change when you're stuck at home. So if you didn't work out or eat well before, now's a great time to work out and eat healthy. You'll probably be able to save money by eating at home and not eating out as much.

Talk it out. This is an extra-stressful time for many people, which can lead to illness. After all, stress can cause your immune system to weaken, leaving you sick. So having a friend to talk with always helps. Reach out to someone you trust to ask his or her advice, or just to vent.

Stay balanced. Make time for job applications and sending resumes, but also take a break. If you have a flexible enough schedule and are home, try to set a schedule with time slots dedicated to job hunting.
